Attitude The Marketer's Most Important Trait

Attitude is a key part of each of us. A central part of
our make-up, who we are as individuals. It is also a major
factor whether you succeed at what you do or fail. Your
attitude about life can give you many different outcomes to
a situation, the choice is up to you.

For an example, let's say you just woke up on your day off
with plans of doing something outside, to find an unexpected
downpour of rain. You can look at the situation in different
ways, each will have a different outcome. The choice is up
to you.

Scenario one - You are instantly disappointed, fly off
cursing thinking my plans are ruined! You slump into a state
of depression and anger that your entire day is shot. And now
everything you do and everywhere you go is affected by this
course of action. Your cat rubs on your leg and you kick it
off breaking the new lamp you just bought. Your dog comes up
licking your hand, you slap at it and he runs under the table,
knocking over the table and dumping your breakfast in the floor.

Scenario two - You wake up glad to be alive and above ground.
You notice that the wind is blowing and it is raining like
cats and dogs. You realize that the days plans are completely
wiped out. You shrug your shoulders as you prepare to fix
breakfast. Thinking, It will be a good day to spend inside
and catch up on things in here, spend time with my loving
pets. You get things done inside you had put off for months
and enjoyed it.

My examples my be a little extreme, but you get the point.
It is human nature to eact, the emotional side of us.
We can change our outcomes a lot of times if we only start
thinking, instead of reacting. Think, Is this the best
reaction to this situation? If not, try and figure out how
you are going to approach it another way.

Be willing to do what it takes. If you fail at something,
try another approach. Don't give up when you are faced with a
downturn. Work on ways to turn it up. Be willing to help your
referrals. Make yourself available as a mentor and friend.

When we take the proper attitude, success itself may even have
a different definition. It may be more about being satisfied
with our efforts and the way we treat others than the amount
on the checks we get.

Just what is success for you?

Interpreting Tarot Cards Part 3

In the previous article, we looked at an easy tarot card reading method using just the 22 major arcana cards, and got as far as the Wheel of Fortune. We will carry on this week with the 11th card, Justice.

Justice reminds us in an almost karma-like way that ultimately, life is fair and just, and our deeds have to be answered for. If you are in a moral dilemma, or are unsure which of two paths to take, expect this card to feature heavily in your readings. You may also find it if you are suffering remorse for past actions, or have done something particularly good - the deed has come back to you. You are being put on warning that no deed however small goes unnoticed, and ALL need to be paid for eventually, even is this just means accepting responsibility for your actions.

Next up, possibly the scariest and well-know of the tarot cards, the 'Hanged Man'. The Hanged Man is telling us that sometimes, the only way to truly control is to set free, to let go. In readings, the Hanged Man should alert you to the fact that the best answer to a problem is not always the most obvious. On occasion, the desire for action can be counter-productive, and you must withhold from precipitous jumps. This counterintuitive reasoning has to be experienced to be understood.

The next card, card 13, is Death. Of course, it has no relation to physical death, but is associated with endings, or openings of new doorways. Great changes are often heralded by this tarot card. The end of an era can be a sad time, but you must see it for what it really is - an opportunity to grow into the next stage of the cycle. The card may also be a warning that irresistible events are about to unfold, and 'going with the flow' is the only way to keep your head above the turbulent waters. By swimming with the current, you will reach your destination faster.

Temperance is the next tarot card of the major arcana. Temperance means showing moderation and self-control. This card is often a warning that you must slow down if you are to center yourself again. While this may seem dull, even a hurricane has calmness at the center. Certain other cards reinforce the voice of Temperance, and make it doubly important that you 'reign in' your wildness and rediscover your balance, your 'wa'. If you are in the middle of a conflict, the Temperance card is a warning that you should seek the middle ground - an outright victory is impossible, and both sides will lose. In health terms, Temperance suggests the worst may be over - and better times lie ahead.

After Temperance comes 'The Devil'. In a reading, this card does NOT stand for evil, but instead puts you on notice that you are in a dead-end situation, which you must escape. You may be suffering some kind of obsession, or focussing too hard on the physical world to the exclusion of the spiritual. You may have been lead to this pass by incorrect assumptions - the Devil warns you that it is time to re-evaluate those assumptions if you are to have any hope of escaping your current bind.

The last card we will look at this week is 'The Tower' or sometimes 'The Tower Struck By Lightening', meaning a sudden, extreme change of fortune. Often, your p[personality itself dictates the form of the reversal - if you are proud, expect a blow to your ego. If you are obsessed with money, expect a financial loss. Your reaction to the blow is the important thing. The old saying is true - every cloud does have a silver lining, but it can be a terrible job to find it sometimes. Blows of this magnitude serve another purpose too - they allow us to understand more fully who we actually are. Only in times of crisis does the veneer of upbringing fall away to reveal the true person underneath.

Next week, we will look at card 17, the Star.

Do Your Customers Want a Custom Toolbar?

2004, John Calder
http://www.TheEzine.net

Today's surfers aren't always too comfortable installing software on their computers. Especially free software that they don't necessarily understand. With all the horror stories of viruses, spyware, and adware that make the front page these days, it's no wonder.

So is there any way an Internet marketer can introduce a custom toolbar to their customers and prospects? Something they will actually download and use? Whether marketing to a consumer niche, or to other marketers, toolbars have the potential to keep you and your audience connected. They're a great way of extending relationship marketing to the customer's desktop. After all, some of the net's biggest players like Google and Yahoo offer them. Is there a way they can be effective for you too?

As with any of your other products, free or for sale, you have to build credibility and trust in your visitor's mind. This is even more important given the overall fear of software downloads today. Most of the standard techniques to gain trust should work, but you may need to use a combination of all of them for some visitors.

Lots of screenshots will help create comfort and familiarity with the toolbar, and clearly show the benefits the visitor can expect to receive. Perhaps even more powerful for software in particular is a screen-capture video. Can you show exactly how the toolbar is installed, and more importantly, how it's used? There's probably nothing so powerful for your customers as seeing your software installed and running on your own computer.

Don't forget to include testimonials from other users of your toolbar and your other products if you have them. Audio and written details describing the installation and use of your software will go a long way towards helping your customers overcome any misgivings they may have.

Complementary Therapy The Route To Better Back Health

Find Out How to Reduce and Eliminate Chronic Back Pain Using Non-Traditional Therapy

Complementary therapy is concerned with health and wellness from a mind, body and spirit approach. As a past sufferer of back pain resulting from injury and a congenital disorder, I understand how challenging it can be to live with back pain.

The GOOD news is you don*t have to. Studies actually suggest that most chronic back pain can be relieved in just six short weeks.

Among the essential strategies for eliminating back pain include exercise and movement. A progressive exercise program that incorporates stretching and balance can help reduce and even eliminate back pain.

When an exercise program is followed in conjunction with routine complementary therapy, the prognosis for back pain sufferers is exceptional.

Complementary Therapy

So what exactly is complementary therapy and how do you use it to resolve back pain?

Complementary therapy is any type of treatment that does not involve medication and surgery, which aims to reduce or eliminate imbalances in the body through a mind, body and spirit approach. There are many effective complementary therapies available for chronic back pain sufferers.

Three of the most common are discussed below.

Chiropractic

This is usually the most popular complementary therapy sought out by back pain sufferers. Chiropractic treatment involves the use of spinal manipulation to relieve acute and chronic back pain. There is a large body of research that supports the efficacy of chiropractic therapy in conjunction with a strengthening program. In fact, many doctors actually recommend Chiropractic care over traditional care for back pain.

Massage

Massage therapy is a relaxing and invigorating complementary therapy that does wonders for the entire mind, body and spirit of back pain sufferers. Massage therapy can help improve a person*s flexibility and ability to carry out daily functions by improving blood flow to the limbs. Massage also provides an added mental benefit of being calming and relaxing.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is less commonly used to treat lower back pain, but fans of acupuncture therapies will tell you that it is an effective treatment for eliminating pain. Acupuncture treatment relies on the insertion of thin needles into certain energy points on the body. Many people report relief from lower back pain after a series of acupuncture treatments. There are many proven benefits of acupuncture treatment that have been cited, and most recent studies suggest that it is a good complementary therapy for low back pain.

There are several other complementary therapies that are beneficial for back pain sufferers including magnetic therapy. Regardless of which you choose, you are bound to realize positive results if you combine complementary therapy with a regular strength and conditioning program. No one should suffer chronic back pain. There are healing options available if you know where to turn.

Article Hurried Women Syndrome

Are you a hurried woman? The Daily Mail on Saturday 30th April reported on the increasing way that women lead a hurried life which is caused by chronic stresses in life. The article was based on some work by a U.S researcher, Dr Brent Bost, and defined the main sufferer's of the syndrome as affecting as many as 30 million women each year, the Hurried Woman syndrome can drain your energy, cause you to gain weight, (or have trouble keeping your weight stable) increase your moodiness and frustration

It seems that many factors are adding together to make women in the 20-55 age group feel over hurried, rushed and stressed in their lives. You may have a completely different set of life circumstances to your peers, and yet still have the end result - tiredness, trouble with sleep and a lack of motivation amongst other things. How do you put yourself in a position where you can break this cycle, without adding to the ever-increasing amount of time that you have to spend doing a thousand and one tasks each day?

Here are 5 top tips to help you put the hurry behind you and get that much needed perspective back in your life.

1.Understand where you are now. Create self-awareness of what is important to you and your life, to help you see if your hurrying is achieving what you want it to. A great way to do this is to take a blank piece of A4 or larger paper, and draw a circle on it that you divide into 8. Name each part of the circle with an area of your life that is important for you, for instance health, wealth, fitness, family, friends, career, spirituality, relationship/ partner, fun, relaxation - whatever best reflects the different spheres of your life. Think about each area of your life & rate yourself out of 10 with 10 being you completely happy, relaxed & confident in that area of your life, 0 being in that area of your life you feel like you do too much, you aren't in control & that you are generally dissatisfied. You could also rate 0 here if you do not spend any time in this area as you rush too much in the other area's to even get round to that part of your life!

2.Visualise how you would like to be. Check back in here with yourself that you have 8 areas's represented that if you were living a balanced & controlled life that you would want to live in. Think about what you would be thinking, feeling, doing & saying if you were living a balanced life that enabled you to live creatively in each area of your life, without feeling rushed, pressurized and tired from all the stress. What changes do you need to make in your life for those things to be a reality? Which top 5 changes will make a difference & turn you from suffering hurried woman syndrome to a woman in control & balance of her life? What's stopping you taking them? Commit to at least 1 change that you can start right now - and then get out there and doing it!

3.Manage your energy levels. This is a crucial one - often we feel most pressurized and stressed at the times we can least afford it - I know that I do! Help yourself in this by doing all you can to effectively manage your energy. This can include making sure that you are getting the right food to keep you energized all day, getting regular breaks, sleeping well & understanding your natural pattern & working with it rather than against it.

4.Take some time for yourself to smell the roses in life. As you are getting used to not being a hurried woman, this may be difficult for you, so start small if this helps you here - the importance is getting some regular time in your life to recognize the small, and the large things, that make life important for you. Do you know what these are? It could be a walk around the block, a relaxing bath with someone else looking after the kids, or a night out at salsa dancing!

5.Connect with someone important for you. Sharing your concerns with someone close to you & taking time to connect can help you as you build that relationship of connection with them, & also as they say, a rouble shared is a trouble halved! Use the resources that you have close to you to balance out your life effectively, and get the support that you need to make sure that it remains there. Who do you need around you to make that happen?

Your Secret Weapon

Did you know that you had a secret weapon to help you solve
complex and perplexing problems? It is available to each
and every one of us whether we know it or not, whether we
use it or not.

Do you want to know what it is? I knew you would: it's your
subconscious.

Stay with me here... and don't roll your eyes! This is not
some hocus-pocus new age revolution or a pie-in-the-sky
theory. This is a fact and if you're not taking advantage
of it you are missing out big-time.

The best way to explain it is with an example of how I used
it just last night.

It has been very hot up here in the mountains (at least to
me!) and I don't do well in the heat. We have central air
conditioning for the first level but my office is on the
lower level and is way too hot for me to concentrate. So, I
set up a makeshift office upstairs and wired it so I could
operate my desktop computer (downstairs) from upstairs using
my notebook computer. There is special software to do this
and I couldn't get it to work properly: I could operate the
laptop from the desktop, but not the other way around, which
is the way I needed it to work.

I tried everything: technical support at the manufacturer's
website, other user groups on the Internet, comparing the
settings on the different computers (after all, it worked
one way, why won't it work the other way??), reading
documentation, help files, etc. To complicate the
situation, I was using an older version of the software
which was no longer supported. Needless to say, I was very
frustrated and out of options; I couldn't think of anything
else to try.

That's when I decided to use my secret weapon. I realized
that I was spinning my wheels, that there must be a solution
that I just couldn't see, and that I would be able to figure
it out more quickly if I put it away and let my subconscious
work on it for me.

Sure enough, within a few hours I had four new ideas to try.
At 2:00 a.m. I woke up with another one, which turned out
to be the solution to the problem.

It's kind of ironic isn't it? Sometimes the best way to
solve a problem is to stop working on it!

The secret is to take your mind off of it. Go on to
something else. It doesn't have to be an activity that is
related to the problem; in fact I believe that the larger
the difference in activities, the better your result will
be.

My wife is good at this. We often have animal-related
problems to solve such as how to take care of them when we
need to go somewhere, or how to keep the dogs away from the
flower pots, or how to allow the cats on the deck but not
out into the forest. She thinks about it a while and then
goes on to the next thing. Before you know it, she has the
perfect solution; it just pops into her mind while she is
doing something that has nothing whatsoever to do with the
problem.

Try it. It really works!

Bad Breath and Gingivitis

Does this sound familiar to you? My dentist and hygienist mentioned that I had irritated gums as they cleaned my teeth. This is a symptom of gingivitis.

Gingivitis can be a stepping stone to major problems in the mouth and gum line. It can lead to periodontal disease, which is a much more serious problem with the potential for actual bone loss.

Halitosis (bad breath) could be related to a gingivitis infection as both are caused by bacteria. Red, swollen and/or bleeding gums characterize gingivitis. These symptoms are most evident upon flossing and sometimes from brushing.

Bacteria cause gingivitis. And bacteria are considered to be responsible for bad breath.

Sometimes, I could even see the bloodstains that the hygienist quietly wiped away with a towel. It was embarrassing enough to know that I wasn't controlling my gingivitis problem, but to know that she was actually trying not to make a big deal out of it was troubling.

I knew my dentist was concerned because she gave me a bottle of alcohol based mouthwash to try and mentioned that she wanted to see how I looked next time. I don't like using it; there is too much alcohol and the taste is not very pleasant. Alcohol may also dry the mucous membranes in the mouth.

The Problem

Bacteria can stick to your teeth and secrete acid onto them contributing to cavity formation. They can also infect the gums, particularly around the gum line, causing gingivitis. This can manifest initially as bleeding and irritated gums.

Having a lot of uncontrolled bacteria multiplying in the mouth may also lead to bad breath, but there is a natural and normal amount of bacteria in the mouth, and you will never completely get rid of them all, nor would you want to.

Theory has it that it is actually the anaerobic bacteria that live in the tongue and throat that produce sulfur that in turn produce hard to get rid of bad breath. These anaerobes create VSCs or volatile sulfur compounds. One type is the familiar rotten egg smell. There are other odors coming from VSCs as well. These sulfur-producing bacteria may feed on certain foods, like coffee, alcohol and meats.

A gingivitis problem can offer a way for bacteria to easily enter your blood stream and that can lead to additional problems. Systemic infections could come from this. Gingivitis can be something that makes your gums bleed easily in a mild case or it can be the root of deep gum recession, leading to bone loss in the worse case scenarios. (Periodontal disease)

Loss of gum line can be discouraging. A friend of mind once described the process as, getting long in the tooth. Sometimes, people experience this problem by brushing too hard. TIP: Using a soft bristled toothbrush with the type of motion that your hygienist recommends may help prevent eroded gum lines.

Treatment and Prevention

Had you ever heard of under-the-gum cleanings? This could be part of the protocol your dentist might invoke, should you develop periodontal disease. If you know people that have had an under-the-gum cleaning; they may tell you that it is not very pleasant.

Your dentist can deal with this problem in a variety of ways. However, prevention probably is the best option. Include good flossing and brushing habits - see your dentist for details. And you could add a non-alcohol based mouthwash alternative to your regimen.

I'm currently using a special toothbrush that uses vibration to clean the teeth. This device does a better job than a regular toothbrush in keeping my teeth clean. It does take a little while to get used to because of the vibration. It makes many, many vibrations per second. This helps to give it such wonderful cleaning abilities.

Don't feel sad if you have excellent oral health habits but you still have bad breath. This is common and many people experience this same situation. Oral health products that don't contain sodium lauryl sulfates or artificial flavors that can still kill the bacteria that cause bad breath without using harsh alcohol or tough chemicals may be helpful.

I am not a dentist. This article is for information purposes only. This article is not meant for diagnosis, treatment or prevention nor is it meant to give advice. If you have or suspect you have gingivitis, periodontal disease or any other dental problems, visit your dentist for a consultation.

How To Improve Communication By Really Trying

Do you ever feel misunderstood? Do you explain your side of things in what you believe is reasonably well-phrased English only to have the other person respond in such a way as to prove he/she did not get it? I'll admit to having this experience and I find it extremely frustrating, which is why a recent happening held so much meaning for me.

After Christmas, I spent two weeks in Europe where I struggled valiantly to make myself understood employing my exceedingly rusty college French. (I was a French major and graduated with seven years of the language under my mortar board, but that was a long, long time ago and I've barely said so much as a onjour in 40 years.)

Somehow, my accent remained elegant. (Thanks Mademoiselle Chamberlain.) But my prior vast vocabulary was reduced to that of a toddler and embarrassingly, I was unable to express myself in anything but the present tense. Neither yesterday nor tomorrow existed for me in Paris.

I realized that most of my listeners had little idea what I was talking about. When I intended, for instance, to mention my hair, I often discussed my horse. The puzzled look on one shop owner's face told me he had not the faintest idea why I had asked for a glove that would fit on a loaf of bread (pain--pronounced pan) instead of on my hand (main--pronounced man).

Upon returning home, I felt a rush of kinship with my fellow citizens. For the most part, without thinking, I speak in the tense I mean to with words that slip from my lips like water and incredibly, people understand! Giddiness overtook me one day when shortly after my visit, I entered a drug store day, and my request to a clerk for a toothbrush was met by a lovely smile and a finger pointed to Aisle 6. I heaved a sigh of relief. I call it the Rite Aid Miracle.

That kind of effortless communication, it struck me, is what I have always expected and assumed takes place between two people. But standing in that drug store, it occurred to me how frequently words, instead of connecting people, create barriers to our understanding.

I had thought, while I was in France, that language was the obstacle. On returning home, I realized the truth. Communication is much more than an extensive vocabulary and graceful grammar. Culture, habit, skill and yes, even hormones, affect our ability to convey meaning to others.

Achieving understanding is not simply a matter of clearly stating our needs and desires. The problem is that once the words leave our mouths, they move through invisible filters in the other person's brain. There (assuming they are heard at all), they are interpreted, enhanced, turned upside down and often given new meaning based on our listener's life experience, feelings toward us and dozens of other personalized quirks. This is why, when we ask our mate if he wants to go out with the Smiths on Saturday night and he responds, Sure, we assume the matter is settled. But when we suggest to said mate on Saturday afternoon at five, that he might want to start getting ready, he looks at us as if we've just moved into the house from Jupiter.

We cannot assume that another person has received our words in the way we intended them. We might be more successful in conversations with others if we did as we might in attempting to converse with someone who does not speak our language very well. Since I've returned home, I imagine the person I'm speaking to hardly understands English. In this way, I do everything possible to help him (OK, my husband), understand me. I try different ways of saying the same thing. I ask whether I have been understood. I have become much more alert to that look in the eye that tells me he is currently on Maui despite the fact I can see him in front of me in our living room in Idaho.

The real secret here is that we need to take responsibility not only for what we say, but for how it is interpreted. It would be nice if I had better news, but this is it--one more way to ensure we can get what we need is by consistently checking that we are both speaking the same language.

Get linked!

Getting linked is the very simple concept of having other web
sites link to yours.

Notice I said 'simple concept' not 'simple process'. It is a
lot of work to find sites that have a similar audience as
yours, then search their site to see if they even offer free
links to other sites, and then find contact information to
ask them to link to you.

Here are the top 5 excuses I have heard for not getting linked:

1. It takes way too much time
2. For every five I ask, I'm lucky if one actually links me
3. The sites that link to me always seem to have low traffic
4. I never get more than a few visitors a day from these links
5. I hate having to give a reciprocal link

My responses to these excuses:

1. Spend 30 minutes a day and find as many places as you can.
If you stay with it you will be amazed at how much you will
have accomplished after a couple of months.

Some days you may only find one or two sites, but on others you
will get lucky and find a place with dozens of resources listed.
You can then just visit each of those and wipe out a large
number at one time.

2. It is definitely a numbers game but if you don't ask you
will never know if they would have linked to you or not. There
are also many factors that can better your chances of getting
a return link. I will go into more detail below.

3. Many times this will be the case because the sites with
tremendous traffic usually want you to advertise with them or
have equal traffic counts for a reciprocal linking arrangement.

Several points to keep in mind, though. First, some of these
sites may not stay small forever, and as their traffic grows
you will hopefully start to see more visits from them. The
other thing to keep in mind is that if you stick with this
you will end up with a couple hundred links in no time. If
each site sends you only one visitor per day that is an
additional couple hundred visitors that you didn't have before.
And its free!

4. The answer here is basically the same as the last. Another
benefit of these links is boosting your link popularity for
search engine ranking.

5. Create a links page with links to other useful sites. Place
your reciprocal links on that page. Don't bury the links page
but offer it as just one more valuable piece of content for
your visitors.

Some larger sites require a graphic or link on your main page
to consider your request. I typically skip these and go to the
next site, unless their link adds value to what I'm offering
on my main page and if there is a good chance I'll get a great
deal of additional traffic from them. You can try it out for
awhile and if you aren't comfortable with the arrangement,
just remove the graphic and let them know that they can re-
move your link from their site. At least you have given it a
try.

To look at it another way, if you sell advertising on your
site you are sending away some of your visitors in exchange
for money.

In a link exchange you might send away some of your visitors,
but in return you are getting additional traffic to your site.
Typically you would have to spend your own advertising dollars
to get this traffic anyway, so it is the same as if you had an
advertiser on your home page.

Besides, hopefully your site will be interesting enough to
keep them around for awhile, and when they are done, then they
will go and visit your links.

Now that we've covered the excuses, let's look at how you can
increase your chances of getting linked from other sites.

First thing is that you really should have a quality site.
Don't just throw together a page of banners and expect people
that have worked very hard to get the hundreds of thousands
of visitors to want to link to you. Your link adds no value
to their site.

The next important item is to personalize your email to them.
Actually take the time to visit their site and find something
that you like about it. Find contact information and even a
name if it is listed.

Find the specific category or page that you feel your site
would fit well on and mention that page specifically in your
email.

If they think your email is generic they'll delete it right
away. I know I do. The latest fad is to use automated programs
to create theme pages and blast out automatic emails to every
site the program finds.

This may work to an extent but more than likely the only ones
that really benefit from this are the creators. The search
engines already know about this and have provisions to
penalize sites using these. Read through the second bulleted
topic on this page:
http://doc.altavista.com/advsearch/asthawpopularity.html

They have quickly gone the way of the FFA pages, or the Dodo.

If you make an honest effort at this you can expect a decent
return for your efforts. Look for shortcuts and your chances
of huge success are shorted.

The next logical question in all of this is how in the world
you find sites to link to you.

My favorite starting point is to find the sites that are
linking to my competition. If they are willing to link to my
competitor, they just might be willing to link to me too.

I use this great resource:
http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/

Its purpose is to show you how popular sites are in relation
to others, and it gives a ranking such as Player, Contender,
900 lb Gorilla, etc.

When you get to that link just enter in a couple of your
competitors, and your own URL as well, and click Generate
Report. This will show you how you rate as compared to your
competition.

The other nice feature is you can click on the results for
the domain for each of the search engines. Meaning, if it
found 200 links to a site listed in HotBot, you can just
click the number 200 in the listing and it will take you
to the HotBot results. Then you just visit each of those
sites, learn a little about them, then fire off an email
to the webmaster.

This method should give you a great start and keep you busy
for a while.

The bottom line is that there are many benefits to getting
other sites to link to you, just don't let the excuses
keep you from getting linked!

Basic Reiki

This is a very simplified primer on basic Reiki. It's intended as a basic lesson to help someone get started channeling the energy and in no way should be considered a Reiki Course in itself.

What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese phrase which means Universal Energy. Its history is enshrouded in myth, legend and parable, but the simple fact is, it works. Reiki is simply the process of channeling Universal Energy through oneself and into some one (or something) else. The vast range of uses for Reiki range from healing oneself to opening and balancing the Chakras and even charging objects and food with the energy.

Getting Started
Reiki is safe and simple to use. To get started simply sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Put on the music of your choice and relax. Place your hands over your face with your palms over your eyes. Touch your tongue to the roof of your mouth with the tip of your tongue just behind your front teeth.

As you inhale just open up and feel the energy flow down through the top of your head and down to your heart chakra, then feel it flow out along your arms and out through your hands and into your face. At the simplest level that ALL you have to do. The energy will go wherever it's needed and do whatever is required of it. You don't have to send it anywhere in particular or try to control it.

Getting Deeper
Reiki flows through you simply by your 'intent'. You just have to intend to open up to it and you'll find it readily available. You may feel many different things while giving yourself a Reiki treatment. Your hands or the part of your body covered by your hands may get hot, cold or tingly. Some people feel it very easily and others take awhile to open up to it. The simplest explanation that I've found is to think of what the emotion 'Love' feels like, and then just relax and let it flow.

I always advise everyone to study Reiki. Any energy worker, massage therapist, healer, martial artist or metaphysician can greatly benefit from Reiki, and there are many FREE Reiki classes and sources of training available, as many of us try to make it as easily accessible as possible to anyone who wants it.
I'll soon be publishing a comprehensive Reiki course, including the symbols and hand positions, to the web as a PDF file that anyone can download and study, as well as a list of Reiki Master willing to do free attunements.

I hope this simple exercise helps some of you who've been interested in Reiki, but just haven't made the leap into studying it yet.

Pushing Through Your Comfort Zone

Our greatest growth in life comes from pushing through our present comfort zone. This process starts at birth. A baby feels safe, warm and secure in its mother's womb. However, to stay there much longer than the gestation period would mean certain death for both the mother and child. Life began for all of us as we left the comfort and security of the womb and faced the strange and unfamiliar world outside. Our first breath is often a painful experience, a cry of protest at temporary discomfort. Yet without this experience, our life would be fleetingly short.

Each milestone of growth and accomplishment for a young child involves leaving an existing comfort zone. The first crawl, the first step, many new, first experiences all push from the familiar into the unknown. For the child the process of pushing through their area of comfort leads to increasing independence and the formation of their unique personality and character.

This foundational principle continues into adult life. In order to enrich our life, it is necessary to step out of our present comfort zone. Personal growth occurs when a person moves out of their area of comfort and into the unknown and challenge of a fresh experience. There is a stage of risk and discomfort before any significant growth in our life. For each of us there comes a point where we hold back and resist. It becomes easier to remain static and comfortable than to keep moving forward.

What holds us back?

Whenever we consider taking on a new project, or venture, or want to put ourselves out there, we feel fear. Fear is natural, and is to be expected. It is our body's way of letting us know we are moving out of our comfort zone. Fear can alert us to possible threats and dangers. However unlike our cave men predecessors, many of the threats today are not life threatening. Fear can warn you and enable you to be more aware and cautious, but need not stop you progressing. If you want to move forward on the journey towards where you want to be, you will have to confront your fears. Unfortunately many people allow fear to stop them, and don't achieve their goals and aspirations.

Fear does not feel comfortable, and many people want to avoid it at all costs. Everyone experiences fear. People who want to be successful feel the fear and do it anyway! Fear is part of the package. Yes, there is always a risk of failure, but that needs to balanced with the old adage Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained. A child's risk of falling when taking those first faltering steps is high. Yet, what a transformation to a child's life once they have mastered the skill of walking! Limitless possibilities are opened up in the child's life. The falls and tumbles are soon forgotten overshadowed by the new adventures and experiences.
Pushing through to leave your comfort zone is hard work. Nature demonstrates that graphically for us. The chick pecking it's way out of the shell, the butterfly struggling from it's cocoon, illustrate how that struggle is necessary in order to bring life, growth and success.
The good news is that once we have faced our fears and done it anyway, we have moved forward to a new place. Every time we push through and live out of our comfort zone we will never be the same. Growth happens!

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. US Supreme Court Justice, once said
Man's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.

I believe this is true of not only our mind, but also of who we are as unique people. Life moves into a new dimension through each experience we go through in life.
However there is also the possibility that once we have pushed through our comfort zone into a new place of growth, we rest too long there, and create a different comfort zone!
Let's keep pushing through and moving forward towards growing our uniqueness and living our life fully.

Bamboozled

Here's the scenario: Julie, a hardworking secretary, lent money to her good friend Ray; $1300 to be exact. Ray had just moved to a new town and claimed that he needed two new suits: one for an upcoming wedding and one to wear on job interviews. Ray lived in a beautiful penthouse. He had a degree in Computer Science and was accustomed to the finer things in life - designer labels, frequent travel, and spa week-ends. When Ray told Julie he would repay her and signed a paper promising to do so, Julie didn't think anything of it.

A couple of weeks later, Ray tried to hit Julie up for more money; this time to furnish his new home. When she told him that she wouldn't be able to help him out this time, he accused her of being cold and hung up the phone on her. Julie suddenly realized that she was being taken advantage of. Her hurt quickly turned to rage. She wanted to know how someone could be so self-serving and inconsiderate. If Julie had been weak enough to lend Ray another several hundred dollars for furniture, how could he sleep at night knowing that she had expenses of her own to look after?

We as women have an innate desire to nurture whenever possible. Many of us have learned the hard way that we must always keep our guard up - spot when we may be being misled or taken advantage of. It is a common belief that a woman who is eager to lend money to a man, suffers from naivety, desperation, or poor self-esteem. But in this case it was a loan not a gift, and a friendship not a romantic relationship.

We all know how risky it is to lend money to a friend of either sex. Some of us decide to give the lendee the benefit of the doubt because we think we know and trust them. Some of us are vigilant enough to take precautions to make the loan legally binding. The bottom line is that we need to stop stereo-typing and pointing fingers at a woman who would lend a man money. We need to take a closer look at the character of anyone who would try to take advantage of a friend's generosity.

Along with her respect for him, Julie also lost all compassion for Ray and their so-called friendship deteriorated. The fact of the matter is that no one can respect a man who fails to respect others. When he performs actions that are self-serving and manipulative, his sincerity, his honour, and his integrity are all called into question.

They say:

It's not what we eat but what we digest that makes us strong; not what we gain but what we save that makes us rich; not what we read but what we remember that makes us learned; and not what we profess but what we practice that gives us integrity.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

A shooting pain in the knee. A burning sensation in the hand. Before you know it, you have rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammation of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks normal tissues as if they were invading antibodies. Rheumatoid arthritis also causes inflammation of the tissues around the joints and other organs of the body. The hands and feet are the most affected areas of rheumatoid arthritis although it can also affect any joint lined by a membrane. Rheumatoid arthritis is referred to as a systematic illness and sometimes called rheumatoid disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis manifests itself over a period of a few months. However, for some, the disease appears overnight. Accelerated onset of rheumatoid arthritis does not mean the individual is at greater risk of the progression of the disease. Rheumatoid arthritis can lasts for years without symptoms. But rheumatoid arthritis is an illness that progresses and has the potential to cause joint destrution and functional disability. Usually, patients suffer cycles from severe to light symptoms. In terms of statistics, rheumatoid arthritis is three times more common in women than in men. It also besets people of all races equally. Rheumatoid arthritis can begin at any age but most often start in the early forties.

What causes rheumatoid arthritis? The truth is, its cause is still unknown. Viruses, bacteria, and fungi have long been suspected but none has been proven to be the cause. The cause of rheumatoid arthritis has been the focus of different research activities. There are some scientists who believe that the tendency to develop rheumatoid arthritis may be genetically inherited while others believe that certain factors in the environment might elicit the immune system to attack the body's own tissue components. This attack results to the inflammation in various organs such as lungs or eyes.

Researchers have also found that environmental factors may also play a role in the cause of rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, scientists reported that smoking tobacco increases risk in the development of rheumatoid arthritis.

The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis depend on the degree of tissue inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis is said to be active if the body tissues are inflammed. When the tissue inflammation subsides, rheumatoid arthritis is said to be in remission. Remissions may happen spontaneously or with treatment and can last for weeks, months, even years. During active rheumatoid arthritis, symptoms are felt. Symptoms may include fatigue, lack of appetite, low grade fever, and muscles and joint aches. Muscles and joint stiffness are usually felt during mornings and after a period of inactivity. During relapses (from inactivity to activity) of rheumatoid arthritis, joints become red, swollen, painful, and tender. This happens because the tissue lining of the joints become inflamed which results in the excess production of joint fluids.

Multiple joints are usually inflamed in symmetrical pattern and the joints of both hands and wrists are often affected. Simple tasks such as turning the door knob and opening the jars can be painful. Rheumatoid arthritis can also affect the joint responsible for the tightening of vocal cords to change the tone of the voice although rarely. But when this happens, it can cause hoarseness of the voice.

As mentioned before, rheumatoid arthritis is a systematic disease which can affect organs and areas of the body other than the joints. Sjorgen's syndrome is the inflammation of the glands of the eyes and mouth which causes dryness. Rheumatoid inflammation of the lung lining can cause chest pains because the lung tissue itself is inflamed and nodules of inflammation also develop within the lungs. Rheumatoid arthritis can also reduce the number of red blood cells which can result to anemia and white blood cells which can result to increase risk of infections. A rare, serious complication of rheumatoid arthritis is blood vessel inflammation which can impair blood supply to tissues and lead to death of tissues.

A rheumatologist is a doctor who specializes in arthritis and other related diseases. The rheumatologist reviews the history of symptoms, examines the joints, and the other parts of the body for the inflammation. The diagnosis is usually based on the pattern of symptoms, the distribution of the inflamed joints, and the blood and x-rays obtained.

Until now, there is no known cure for rheumatoid arthritis. Reducing joint inflammation and pain, maximizing joint function, and preventing joint destruction is the current goal in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Early medical intervention has been found to improve outcomes in treatment. Optimal treatment includes combination of medications, joint strengthening exercises, joint protection, and patient education. Treatment is customized according to many factors such as disease activity, types of joints involved, general health, age, and occupation. But treatment is most successful when there is close cooperation between the doctor and the patient.

Ayurvedic Medicine For Type 2 Diabetes

Traditional Indian medicine, herb Salacia oblonga may help treat diabetes Posted By: News-Medical in Medical Study News Published: Tuesday, 8-Feb-2005 Printer Friendly Email to a Friend : : : : Herbs used in traditional Indian medicine to treat diabetes seems to lower blood sugar and insulin levels in a manner similar to prescription drugs, a new study reports. Researchers gave extracts of the herb Salacia oblonga to 39 healthy adults, and the results were promising. The largest dose of the herb extract - 1,000 milligrams - decreased insulin and blood glucose levels by 29 and 23 percent, respectively. : : These kinds of reductions are similar to what we might see with prescription oral medications for people with diabetes, said Steve Hertzler, a study co-author and an assistant professor of nutrition at Ohio State University. : : Salacia oblonga, which is native to regions of India and Sri Lanka, binds to intestinal enzymes that break down carbohydrates in the body. These enzymes, called alpha-glucosidases, turn carbohydrates into glucose, the sugar that circulates throughout the body. If the enzyme binds to the herbal extract rather than to a carbohydrate, then less glucose gets into the blood stream, resulting in lowered blood glucose and insulin levels. : : Lowering blood glucose levels lowers the risk of disease-related complications in people with diabetes, Hertzler said. Also, poor compliance with diabetes medications often hinders the effectiveness of these drugs. It may be easier to get someone to take an herb with food or in a beverage, as opposed to a pill. : : The study appears in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. : : Thirty-nine healthy adults participated in four separate meal tolerance tests. These meals, which were given in beverage form, were spaced three to 14 days apart. Each participant fasted for at least 10 hours before consuming the test beverage. : : Participants were asked to drink about two cups' worth of the chilled beverage, which contained zero, 500, 700 or 1,000 milligrams of Salacia oblonga extract. Afterward, the researchers used the finger-prick method to draw blood samples from each person every 15 to 30 minutes for three hours. These blood samples were used to determine insulin and blood glucose concentrations. The biggest changes in blood glucose and insulin levels usually happen within the first two hours after eating. : : The beverage that contained the highest concentration of the herbal extract - 1,000 milligrams - provided the most dramatic reduction in insulin and blood glucose levels. Insulin levels were 29 percent lower, while blood glucose levels were 23 percent lower as compared to the control drink, which contained no herbal extract. : : As Salacia oblonga can cause intestinal gas, the researchers had the study participants collect breath hydrogen samples hourly for eight hours after drinking the test beverage. The participants collected their breath in small plastic tubes. The researchers then analyzed these breath samples for hydrogen and methane content - the level of either substance in the breath corresponds to the level contained in the colon. : : The subjects also rated the frequency and intensity of nausea, abdominal cramping and distention and gas for two days after consuming each test meal. : : While the test beverages containing Salacia oblonga caused an increase in breath hydrogen excretion, reports of gastrointestinal discomfort were minimal, Hertzler said. : : Right now he and his colleagues are trying to figure out what dose of the herb is most effective, and when it should be taken relative to a meal. : : We want to know how long it takes for the herb to bind to the enzymes that break down carbohydrates, Hertzler said. The participants in this study took the herb with their meal, but maybe taking it before eating would be even more effective. : : The researchers also want to study the effects of Salacia oblonga in people with diabetes. : : A lot of studies show that lowering blood sugar levels reduces the risk for all kinds of diabetes-related complications, such as kidney disease and nerve and eye damage, Hertzler said. We want to see if this herb has this kind of effect. : : Salacia oblonga is still relatively difficult to find in the United States, Hertzler said, although there are manufacturers that sell the herb through the Internet. : : This study was supported by the Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories in Columbus. : : Hertzler is continuing to conduct Salacia oblonga studies with the Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories. He has no links to the company beyond this affiliation. : : Hertzler conducted the work with former Ohio State colleague Patricia Heacock, who is now at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; Jennifer Williams, a clinical scientist with Ross Products Division, Abbott Laboratories; and Bryan Wolf, a former research scientists with Ross Products Division

Aromatherapy: Mind & Emotions

Aromatherapy makes use of Essential oils. This the second part of this 3-Part article will discuss the way essential oils effect the mind and emotions.

b) The Way Essential Oils Effect the Mind and Emotions
The Mind and Emotions, or rather the way we think and feel, are effected by essential oils via our sense of smell, as are all the odors we consciously and UNCONSCIOUSLY detect.

The Sense of Smell forms the greater part of our Sense of Taste (note how your sense of taste and smell is affected when you have a head cold or blocked up nose. The sense of smell is also affected by pollution, smoking, trauma to the nose itself and a mucous forming diet).

The sense of smell of our ancient ancestors was far superior to ours. They identified one another by smell as well as sight, and could even detect the usefulness of a plant by its smell. They also tracked animals by smell.
The sense of smell helps us to distinguish between 'good' and 'bad' odors, which tell us if food is fit to be eaten or if there is disease or hygiene present.

ODOURS & DISEASE
A couple of hundred years ago, physicians would use the sense of smell as a diagnostic aid. Arthritis and rheumatism have an acid smell, a good midwife could tell a post-partum haemorrhage by the smell of blood passed, diabetes gives an acetone smell to the breathe and the urine, perspiration can give us clues as to the health of the kidneys and lymphatic system, the smell of faeces also can tell us the type of disease in the digestive tract. Natural medicine still uses this method of diagnosis.

The human nose has the ability to distinguish many thousands of different odors, and the memory of these odors is stored deep in our sub-conscious minds. (See R. Tisserand 'The Art of Aromatherapy pages 60-73).

When we inhale air molecules which, are carrying the 'odoriferous' molecules of an essential oil, these molecules adhere to our Olfactory nerve endings in the back of the nose, producing stimulation of these nerve endings.

Sensory stimulation of the Olfactory centre is by a relay of nerve impulses from the sensory nerve endings in the nose to the brain.

This is a very rapid and direct pathway to the part of the Brain which directs, controls, interprets and responds to sensory input.

This pathway is very different to sensory stimulation of the sensory nerves in the skin which is more complex, being transmitted from a sensory nerve ending to the spinal cord, to the brain, back down the spinal cord, down a motor nerve ending and then to the appropriate organ. For example when we touch a hot object, the heat affects the sensory nerve ending in say the finger. This nerve relays a message along the sensory nerve fiber to its root in the spinal cord. The impulse is carried to the brain. The brain says ouch !!! that's hot, take the finger off now.

This message is relayed down the spinal cord to the motor nerve root, and then to the appropriate muscle(s) organ(s) etc. to remove the finger from the hot object. As you will know from your own experience of touching something hot, there is often a time lag between touching the hot object and recognition of pain.

With the Olfactory Nerve there is no relay station - stimuli goes straight to the part of Central Nervous System called the LIMBIC SYSTEM, and the response is instant. Furthermore, the message cannot be blocked by the conscious mind.

The interesting and exciting aspect of this use of Essential Oil Therapy is that different essential oils produce different responses. Some affect the higher thought processes in the Cerebral Cortex by altering the electrical activity of different Cortical areas, and some affect the Hormone Producing cells in the Limbic System. These 'Brain Hormones' will then either effect the mental and emotional responses of the Brain itself, or will be released into the blood stream from where they may be carried to distant organs to produce the desired effect on the body chemistry.

Are You Fed Up?

Neale Donald Walsch - Are You Fed Up?

There is no better place to be than Fed Up. That's the place of new beginnings. That's the place of letting go. That's the place of giving up. You are giving up what's been going on so far, and getting ready to create a new reality.

I know with all the talk of war and terror levels and how shall we respond, what is the answer, it's not so difficult to feel like giving up. If you feel like giving up, I'd like you to consider giving up one more thing; I'd like you to give up your idea that you can't find an answer.

I'm here to tell you that you can.

God will never let you down, and if you have not received any response from God before it is not because He hasn't answered, it is because, like me, you have been unable to hear the response. But trust me. God is responding. Right now. And every day and moment of your life.

I have often heard from people interpreting CwG Book 1 to say that God couldn't care less about your daily experience and that God just wants you to go out and play. That would be a mischaracterization and I don't want you to hang in there with that. God does care about your experience. God simply doesn't care how you go about creating it. Imagine loving parents watching their children at play in the yard. They don't care whether their children play Tag or Hide-'n-Seek. It matters not to them what games are invented. But they do care about whether the children are safe, and having a good time. So they make sure the yard is safe, and, if the children get hurt and call out for help, the parents are right there, running out to the yard to see what's up, and to make everything better.

It is not so very different with God. She gives us the toys with which to fashion the most wonderful games (read that, life) and a safe place in which to play. Then, He leaves us alone to have our experience, and has absolutely no preference whether we play Tag, or Hide-'n-Seek. But if we call for help, God is there - right there - to make everything better.

That is not someone who doesn't care about our daily experience - that is someone who loves us enough to give us our freedom to do as we wish, and promises to be there for us whenever we need Him. Sounds like a pretty neat God to me.

So now, call on God to answer you. Ask God to show you a sign, give you some help, and provide you with some special insight that might help you now. But be on the lookout. Her response may come in a form other than the one you are expecting. It could by the lyrics of the next song you hear, the story line of the next movie you see, the text of the next book that falls into your hands. It could be the chance utterance of a friend on the street, or a thought that comes to you in the middle of the night.

So watch! Look! Listen! For you do not know the Hour, nor the Form, in which God will come with your word of encouragement. For all you know, it could be something you read in a book somewhere...

Choose the right incense burner

Incense and incense burners come in many different varieties. While incenses vary in essences and aromas, incense burners vary in materials and shapes. Not only the incense you choose will have an effect on your environment, but the incense burner you use will do so as well. The incense you choose might affect your mood and the chi flow around it, while the incense burner might directly affect the feng shui of the space where it is as well as directly affect those who keep it.

Incense burners go hand to hand with incenses since they offer the most comfortable and practical way for you to burn your incenses. Besides, it would add symbolism and harmony to the incense burning activity and to the effect that the essence the incense contains has.

If you wish to have an incense burner which adapts to feng shui principles then you should choose it in order that it helps you adding balance to your house environment. You can do this by choosing it according to the material it is made of or the colors it contains. If you need to add metal to a specific area in order to create harmony, you should look for a metal incense burner. On the other hand, if you need other elements, such as water or fire, you should choose an incense burner painted in colors that represent the wished element.

Another very important factor to consider regarding incense burners are their shapes. You may be able to find incense burners with different forms and imitating different objects. Therefore, you can add symbolism with your incense burner depending on the shape it has and what it represents.

An example of incense burner you may be able to find is a lotus flower shaped one, which would symbolize purity and wisdom as well as it would help you attracting good fortune to your house or any other place where it is used. Lien Hua or the lotus flower is, according to Chinese traditions, a symbol of knowledge, wisdom and purity, and therefore any object representing it would symbolize those attributes as well.

Why?

I met Sean a year and a half ago in a crowd of 50,000 people. We struck up a conversation and really hit it off. He gave me his number, which I forgot. I thought about tracking him down, but figured if it was meant to be we would meet again. Three weeks later I got a phone call from him, and we have been together ever since, until about a month ago.

I left my friends and my life that I was used to. Everything was fantastic, we were in love, we thought we were going to get married. We just mentioned it a few times, but it wasn't really a topic of conversation. Anyway, something changed in Sean two months ago.

He didn't cheat that I know of, but in a week's time he broke up with me, demoted himself from a high ranked position at his job, and became depressed. He went to the doctor and is doing better now, but I am confused. How can everything be so great and all of a sudden he changes his mind about everything in his life?

He still likes to have sex and hang out with me sometimes, but doesn't have any interest in getting back together. I need to stop showing interest in him, I think, and get on with my life, but I am having a hard time doing this. Why is he acting this way, and is there any way we will be together again?

Jessica

Jessica, most people never find out the true why behind another's actions. Everyone wants the imaginary closure, but the closure they want is to have what they want. That is why almost no one gets closure.

As a psychological concept, closure doesn't work. When a relationship ends, people don't want to learn why, they want to learn why not. They want to fix it. But if a man used a woman for sex, how will learning the truth give her closure? If a woman never loved the man, how can that truth give him closure?

You are not in a relationship with Sean, but he is having sex with you. He sounds like somebody with a plan for himself. Friendship sex is not in your best interest. You need to stop having sex with him and move on. Asking why only traps you.

Winnowing

I am a female, 19. I am more mature than my age, and sometimes I feel I am trapped with an old soul in a young body. I fell in love with a man, 38. We were in a long-distance relationship for six months, but two months ago we decided I would move to New York to be with him and build my life there.

We had a bad time. I couldn't find myself, and he was occupied with his business. I was very unhappy and we argued constantly. Now I am back in Israel, and he is there. He decided it would be easier for me to build my life here, and it would be good for us to take a break. He is afraid I might regret marrying him because I haven't experienced life yet.

Is this kind of relationship possible, or am I holding on to something which is doomed from the start?

Leah

Leah, why do you need to mention age difference or other factors? When you were with him in New York, you were unhappy and argued constantly. Why can't that be the truth of the matter? You gave it a try, it didn't work, he pulled away.

Every man is not your future husband. Most men you will date until you see the relationship isn't going anywhere. That's what dating is all about--not snaring a man, but separating the wheat from the chaff. He's chaff. You're looking for wheat. Keep sifting.

Press Release

Asbestos Victims Under Attack by Propos

Asbestos-exposed individuals have a high risk of developing mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, or other asbestos-related diseases.

Woodland Hills, CA July 21, 2004 -- Mesothelioma Advisor has released a new report on proposed legislation that will negatively impact asbestos victims, available at http://www.mesothelioma-advisor.org/article-1.php . The article was written by Eric N. Scholnick, Attorney at Law.

It has recently been reported, in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, among others, that thousands of allegedly unimpaired individuals are filing asbestos personal injury lawsuits. These news reports state that these asbestos claims may threaten the financial well-being of numerous large corporations. Corporate and insurance company officials are quoted on the need for federal legislation, to control asbestos cases. In their words, they want to make sure money goes to those who are truly sick.

It is important to see the big lie behind these news stories.

Persons who have suffered a detriment at the hands of another are entitled to seek redress in our courts. There has never been a requirement that persons be impaired or disabled in order to seek redress; it is enough that they are injured. The presence of greatly elevated levels of asbestos fibers in one's lungs is clearly a detriment. Most persons who have never been heavily exposed to asbestos would never trade lungs with a Navy veteran, even if that Navy veteran had not yet suffered an impairment or disability. Asbestos-exposed individuals have a far greater risk of developing mesothelioma (a cancer of the lung or stomach lining), lung cancer, or asbestosis later in life. It should be left to juries to decide if the presence of those fibers constitutes an injury under the law.

Access to our judicial system is an important right; the judicial system protects Americans from large corporations who sell unsafe products, and conceal the dangers of those products from the public.

Instead, the large corporations which brought the asbestos nightmare upon us, and their insurance companies, now seek federal legislation, to restrict access to, or take the place of, the American jury system. The legislation which has thus far been proposed would appoint a board of review, and make it mandatory that any asbestos case be reviewed by the board to determine if any individual had a right to compensation. All cases would be delayed, so that some claimants would die before their cases could be reviewed, and most cases would be rejected.

The reason for this proposal should be obvious. After years of consistently losing before juries, the asbestos companies, and insurance companies, are once again watching out for the almighty dollar, over the rights of injured persons. This is exactly what these companies did in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and later, as they did all they could to keep their knowledge of asbestos hazards from being made public.

The corporations and insurance companies say they want to make sure that badly injured individuals receive compensation. This is hypocritical, as these same companies have fought, and lost, valid claims for decades. Now, all of a sudden, they say they're concerned about victims. Don't believe them.

The number of asbestos claims is not slowing down largely because the asbestos companies kept selling asbestos products, even into the 1980s. They lied to their customers, saying the products were safe, and kept asbestos products in the market long after they should have been gone.

Cross It Off Your List

This is for people who can't seem to get everything done. Those of you who efficiently take care of every detail ahead of time don't need to read any further.

As a recovering procrastinator I have a great deal of experience with To Do lists. I've embellished them with multi-color highlighters, experimented with assorted list-making software, anything to keep from actually doing the tasks. Along the way I've learned a few tricks you may find helpful.

Make the List
Don't just let the have-tos rattle around in your head making you crazy. Actually write down all the things you're worried about getting done. Then you won't have to spend energy constantly remembering them. I like to start with one main list of everything on my mind in no particular order and then make subsequent lists. Another way is to use sticky notes. You can organize them into categories afterwards. Then I see that Rake Leaves, Move Lawn Furniture, Winterize Garden, and Do Yard Work all go together and aren't really four different things.

Prioritize
Ask yourself is it really essential? Is it something you want to do? Is the result something you want? Does somebody else think you should do it? If that person is the government, your doctor, or your boss it should probably stay on the hot list. But if not, consider setting it aside for now. You could end up with lists called Must, Would Be Nice, and Who Cares. Sometimes the act of placing an item on one list or another helps you determine its importance. Anything left on the Who Cares list at the end of this process gets crumpled up and tossed.

First Things First
Which items are time-sensitive? Are deadlines looming that you mustn't miss? Are downstream events dependent on completion of certain items? It's generally at this point that my anxiety level has subsided enough to unbundle the general headings into smaller pieces. For example Do Financial Stuff gets broken down so that Pay Current Bills goes on one list and File Bank Statements goes on another.

Low Hanging Fruit
Are there a couple of items that you can just take care of this second and then they'd be done? Make the phone calls, send the emails, put the ball in someone else's court. You'll feel great.

Find Out, Decide, Do
Look over your hot list and figure out what kind of action is required. Do you need to get information, make a decision, or just do it. Often an item stays on a To Do list because this step hasn't been addressed. Make sure every item on your list has a verb attached.

Treat Yourself
So you can't stall any longer. It's time to do the work. Make it pleasurable. Combine something you hate with something you enjoy. Listen to music while you wash the kitchen floor. Promise yourself a hot bath or coffee with a friend when the desk is cleared off. Have someone who truly understands what you've accomplished say congratulations with deep sincerity.

So that's the secret of my success. I'll always be a grasshopper in my heart, but I've come to appreciate a day to day sense of accomplishment. That surge of panic when I do something at the last minute has a certain appeal but it can't beat the satisfaction of crossing something off your list.

Are Your Dreams Trapped Inside Your Head?

Sometimes a dream needs a little help.
Even in our social and business relations, the race is not
to the swift, but to the verbal - the spellbinding orator -
the silver-tongued seducer.

As you are reading these words, you are taking part in one
of the wonders of the natural world. For you and I belong to
a species with a remarkable ability. That ability is
language -- Man's most important cultural invention. With
nothing but words, we can reliably cause new ideas to arise
in each other's minds. Hypnosis has proven that mere words
can deeply influence behavior and perception.

Language is a bit like the artist whose palette has only two
or three splotches of color from which to choose. So it
is with a vocabulary that has limited words for painting the
stories of one's past or future. They are colorless and
uninteresting. They lack excitement or persuasion.

Take, for example, the less fortunate hapless worker. He
probably has lofty dreams. But those dreams are trapped
inside his head because No dream or ambition can be told
without being couched in words. Limited words mean limited
expression. Limited language skills mean limited
opportunity. These limitations block efforts to raise him
above the worker class. His struggle to upgrade his
circumstances collapses at the point his language skills
fail to support his aspirations.

BUT LETS TALK ABOUT YOU...
Does your cocktail party repartee come across as
sophisticated conversation, or a confused meandering string
of meaningless babble? Whether you like it or not, your
conversation as well as your language skills tell the world
about your background, even your intelligence.

In a study which polled top executives in fifty-eight of
America's largest companies, every single executive named
personal communications skills as the major factor in their
advancement

You may feel you are stuck with your current education or
intrinsic intelligence. While that may be partially true,
you are not stuck with your current verbal and conversation
skills.

Remember - The race is not to the swift, but to the verbal -
the spellbinding orator - the silver-tongued seducer. You
learn the skills in a matter of weeks, sometimes days. It's
largely a matter of making the that decision and commitment.
Call it a Masters in Verbology.

Ask Right and You May Receive

How easily do you get what you want from others? And how easy is it for you to ask for what you want or need?

Perhaps you haven't worked up the courage to actually make the request you want to make. Or perhaps you've made several requests, but still find your needs unmet. If you're frustrated because you seem to be unable to get what you want and what you ask for, you're not alone.

This happens in all types of relationships, including intimate and dating relationships, family, friendships and work relationships. I'll focus on intimate relationships in this article; however, if you are having a problem getting what you want in any relationship, the information below will be useful as well.

There are ten tricks to getting what you want in any relationship. But surprisingly, these tricks are not about manipulation. Whenever possible, use these ten tricks to get what you want. The more you practice, the better you will get at both asking effectively and getting results.

1. It's ok to ask.
This is the first and most important trick. Understand that you have the right to ask for anything you need or want. Whether it be an evening of help with childcare, help with the chores, an investment in your personal growth, or a gift you want. Always, always ask for what you want from anyone you want it from.

2. Be prepared to hear a yes or a o.
One effective way to ask is to be prepared to hear either a yes or a o. This gives the person you are asking a true choice. People like the freedom and power of being able to truly choose. Ask this way and you are more likely to hear a yes.

3. Never make a o wrong.
If you get a o to your request, be gracious. Anything but a gracious reaction will mean you were making a demand instead of a request. Demands are never responded to very well and are always resisted. Make a o wrong and you are asking for more o's. Be gracious, and you will get a yes in the future.

4. Have an alternative strategy.
You have the right to make a request and the person you are making a request of has the right the say o. This means, like it or not, you need an alternative strategy for getting what you want. If a person says o, you can't somehow make him or her do or give you what you want. You may simply need to employ an alternative strategy and take care of your needs yourself.

5. Assume that it would be a yes if...
Assume the person or people you are asking have your best interests in mind. If you get a o, assume the reasons for your request are not clear. Assume that if your reasons were known, your request would be granted. Make your reasons known, gently.

6. Make the impact known.
How would a yes or a o impact you? Does the person you are asking know the impact of a yes or a o? Small things can and do have a profound impact. So get clear on the impact a yes or a o will have on you. Share this information with the person you are asking.

7. Honor his or her requests.
You're not the only one who wants to get what you want. Others want to hear yes and have their needs met, too. If you consistently give others what they want, you will get what you want more often. The key is to give and do what someone requests...not what you *think* they want. A word of caution here - do not over give to the point of being unappreciated.

8. Don't ever nag.
Nagging is a way of making the same request over and over in order to wear the person down and force what you want. Nagging might sometimes get you want in the short term. But it always backfires because it creates intense anger in both the one being nagged and the one doing the nagging. If you need to repeat a request more than once, do so in the spirit of the ideas above.

9. Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate.
When you get what you want, make a big deal out of it. The giver just made you feel good, so return the favor. The more you appreciate, the more the other person will want to give to you and do for you. In fact, even if you do not feel appreciative, act appreciative. After a while, you will begin to feel appreciative.

10. Cure the, I shouldn't have to ask you to do this syndrome.
Ok, how much do you resent asking someone to do something they should have known to do in the first place? Don't you get angry at having to ask at all? In such cases, remember he or she is not you, but a different person, with different standards and priories. What may be obvious or natural to you may be very hard or may not even occur to another person. You do have to ask to get what you want. Just do it right.

Are you getting all your vitamins?

Far from the Flintstones shapes many of us chewed as kids, adult vitamins provide nutrients needed by a full-grown body. While vitamins are abundant in many foods, many adults do not follow diets that provide all of the vitamins and nutrients needed; a supplement can help augment our daily intake.

Like children, adults need certain vitamins to help our bodies function properly. Vitamins can also help prevent certain types of diseases. For example, vitamin D helps strengthen bones and reduce risk of osteoporosis. Vitamin A enhances vision, and vitamin C helps fight colds. Vitamin B can give us energy, which is certainly necessary in today's busy world. And vitamin E helps skin stay taut, which is definitely a bonus as we begin to age.

Some vitamins are fat-soluble, while others are water-soluble. The first type of vitamins is stored until the body can use the nutrients. These include vitamins A, D, E, and K. The latter type directly enters the blood stream, and what isn't used is excreted through the urine. These vitamins-vitamins B and C, in particular-need to constantly be replenished.

If you are not into popping pills, there are indeed ways to up your vitamin intake by adjusting your diet. These foods are high in vitamins:

Vitamin A

Eggs, milk, carrots, spinach, nectarines, canteloupe, apricots, sweet potatoes

B Vitamins

(There are several types of B vitamins)

Whole grains, seafood, meat, poultry, eggs, dairy products, green leafy vegetables, beans, peas, citrus fruits

Vitamin C

Citrus fruits, canteloupe, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage

Vitamin D

Dairy products, fish, egg yolks

Vitamin E

Whole grains, green leafy vegetables, nuts, egg yolks, sardines

Vitamin K

Green leafy vegetables, dairy products, pork, green leafy vegetables

If you are able to get the vitamins you need directly from the foods you eat, you will benefit most greatly. If not, there are many multi-vitamins available over the counter that will help you reach your nutritional needs. Getting the vitamins and minerals we need is critical to maintaining good health as we get older. Those chewable vitamins you took as a child started the job; it is your responsibility to maintain it!

Lies about Alcohol

Dear Jen,

I have been dating a man I met online for just over a month now. When we first met, he told me that he doesn't drink alcohol, and that is one of the things I liked about him after having been raised by an alcoholic father. The other night, when he came to pick me up for our date, I was sure I smelled alcohol on his breath. What should I do?

Signed,
Swimming in Gin

Dear Swimming in Gin,

I have to say first of all, that you need to be up front with him about this. Tell him about your concerns with alcohol and how it has effected you in the past. Remembering that you can't change him is very important here. What you can do is change yourself and your choices. If he is going to choose to continue to drink and that is not something you can live with, it is maybe time to consider letting the relationship go before it gets even harder. One thing that I do want you to think about is whether or not he was lying in the first place. Maybe he was, or maybe he just went out that night and had an off-character moment and had a drink. Either way, be up front and honest with him and yourself. Your safety and sanity come first.

Good luck to you on your quest for love.

Are You Thinking About What You're Thinking About

Do you realize that your belief system is ultimately what will determine whether you live a successful life or not?

Since your thoughts are what your belief system is composed of, you
should take great care in what you are thinking about because your
thoughts influence the outcome of every area of your life.

Are you thinking about what you're thinking about? The Bible says, As
a man thinks, so is he (Proverbs 23:7). I believe it is safe to
assume that as a man continues to think, so he will remain. Along the
same line, as a man changes his thinking, so he will change himself,
and therefore, his circumstances.

Obviously the key to changing your belief system is changing your thoughts.

Can you think of some things you may have heard growing up that could
be influencing your beliefs today? How about I wish I had two nickels
to rub together or If I had a dollar I would stay up all night and
watch it.

Needless to say this kind of programming is detrimental to your
well-being. If you were told that money doesn't grow on trees, you
will believe that money is hard to come by and you will always
struggle with lack. If you were teased about being fat as a child you
may struggle with your weight today.

If you were constantly told that you were fat as a child your belief
system says you're fat, and even though dieting and excercise will
work just like it will for anyone, you will not sustain permanent
weight loss. The fat child picture burns in your mind causing you to
regain any weight you may have lost.

The same goes for finances. If you've never had a large amount of
money and all of a sudden come into some, you will probably find a way
to blow it all. You will sabotage it because in your mind, you do not
see yourself as a financially successful person. It is a fact that the working class earn and spend and the wealthy save and invest. It's all
a matter of thinking, and thinking is a matter of beliefs.

Procrastination, tardiness, lack of follow through, fear of failure
are all qualities that start as thoughts. These thoughts can became
entrenched in your belief system and become obstacles to living an
abundant and prosperous life.

Think rightly about the things you want to attract. Get around like minded people who have the kind of life you want to live. Go out to dinner with them, sit around a fire pit and talk about ideas, or play golf together. If they are not physically accessible, listen to their tapes and read their books.

We must take care of what we put into our minds. For what goes in may also come out.

Attention Old People Of ALL Ages!

Copyright Jan Tincher - All Rights reserved

http://www.tameyourbrain.com

Do you feel old? Do you look old? Do you think old?

Every time I get together with certain friends, age is inevitably discussed. I cringe inwardly and get very busy going *Cancel, Cancel!* in my mind. This is some of what's said.

That's what happens when you get old. *Especially at your age. Act your age, old man/lady. I can't remember anything. Al's been visiting. What's the matter? You got A? *Both are a reference to Alzheimer's Disease. It's almost an invitation.*

What do each of those sentences say to your brain?

Your mind does the thinking. Your mind is in charge of your brain.

Your brain is in charge of your nerves. If your mind tells your brain that it is getting old, in other words if you are thinking these thoughts, your brain will relay the process of getting old to the nerves, usually more quickly than needed. Do you want that?

Let's go back to your friends again. Now, you're sitting there, and feeling old, with your best friends. They are in effect telling you how life is going to be for you. Not only for you, but for everyone that is listening.

Of course, your response to reading the paragraph above might be, *No they aren't. I know it doesn't have to be that way.*

But it is going to be that way for you, unless you do something.

And you're saying, *I don't believe that.*

Very good! You're telling me, and ultimately your brain, that you don't believe it. Isn't that terrific? You are taking control.

But that isn't how it is when you are talking to your friends, is it?

You're not on your guard then. You are letting everything slip through. You laugh at the jokes about Alzheimer's. You make your own jokes about memory. *You can tell me anything and it'll be news to me.* *You can tell me that joke tomorrow. I'll bet I'll think it's funny all over again.* *I can hide my own Easter eggs!*

You can joke about all the infirmities that happen to *old* people. *Do you have to go to the bathroom or can you hold it? Answer: Depends.* *Do you want to go golfing or is Art visiting?* A reference to arthritis. Again, almost an invitation.

Some people accept that this happens to everyone who grows old.

That it is inevitable. NOT! Some prefer to joke about it, *while they can.* What kind of a mind set is that?

Hey, everyone grows old. When a person grows old, so do their friends, but some in entirely different ways. By the time a person IS *old,* he or she feels like they *know* what is going to happen for the rest of their lives. Some pretty much accept it. They feel that they know that if *this* happens, *that* happens, then when *that* happens, *this* happens, and that's the way life is.

Wrong.

If you can think, you can change your life.

Yes, people grow old. Some grow old fighting it all the way, hating it. Some grow old gracefully and lovingly, AND healthy.

Unfortunately, a lot of people unwittingly encourage the reactions they think growing old causes. *I know when so and so reached 40 or 50 or 60 or 70 years old, her body just plain broke down. She got arthritis, she had a hysterectomy, her stomach kept getting upset, and on and on. Then almost that same thing happened to so and so and so and so and so.* They then reach what they feel is the logical conclusion that, therefore, when they turn 40 or 50 or 60 or 70, all that stuff will happen to them too. You know the progression, you invite the progression, you encourage the progression. The progression begins to be you.

Well, it's time to stop it, isn't it? Here's what you can do:

First, look at the picture you want of yourself, even when you are *older.* It's a picture of love, self-confidence, high self-esteem, flexibility, strong bones, and prosperity in mind, body and soul. *If those words don't describe what you want, substitute the words that do.*

Second, think of the thoughts that are going through your mind.

Take them one at a time. Does this thought help you to BE your picture?

Third, if it does, that's terrific! Rejoice! If it doesn't, continue to the fourth step.

Fourth, raise your arms and yell, CANCEL! CANCEL! * It's a lot like someone scratching a phonograph record. You don't want to listen to a scratched record, your brain won't want to listen to these thoughts if they cause you to CANCEL! CANCEL! It's like scratching the brain.*

Fifth, immediately think of an affirmation or two that you like. They could be *I love. I am loving. I am loved.* or *I love myself and all creation.* or *Every day in every way, I am better, better, and better.* If you've been reading my articles for a while, you know these are my favorite. However, you must use affirmations that YOU like. Fill the place in your brain that used to hold negative thoughts, with positive affirmations.

There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. No matter what you do, if you live another year, you have grown a year older. If you haven't gotten smarter, you haven't lived. I say, if you're alive, why not live life to the fullest?

How about programming tomorrow to be a day to enjoy?

You can still go for coffee and enjoy your relationships, but now you show by example that YOU don't want to think *old* thoughts. Simply don't participate in saying them.

Don't laugh when you hear them -- a good analogy might be that that type of laughter is another nail in the coffin, your friend's or your coffin, who knows? People will see that you have something good going here. When they are ready to learn and to change, show them this article. When they look at you and the changes you've made in your life, they will know that it is possible. One more thing, make sure to help them along the way on their journey. They, and their family, will thank you for it.

Thanks for reading,

Jan
